In 2023, Dingzhe Gan was commissioned by CHJ Jewelry to develop a packaging series centered on the traditional Chinese filigree craft (intangible cultural heritage). The project translates the intricate language of filigree into a contemporary visual system, aligning the brand’s heritage craftsmanship with a refined illustrative approach.
Through this collaboration, illustration becomes a bridge between traditional technique and modern design, reinterpreting cultural heritage within a contemporary branding context.
ABOUT THIS WORK
The artwork draws inspiration from the delicate structure and ornamental complexity of filigree craftsmanship. Using engraving-inspired line work, Dingzhe Gan constructs densely layered compositions that echo the precision and interwoven nature of the craft itself.
Through controlled, repetitive lines and minimal visual elements, the illustrations build a richly detailed ornamental world, where simplicity transforms into intricacy. This approach creates a visual parallel between traditional filigree techniques and printmaking aesthetics, allowing the image to embody both material sensitivity and structural elegance.
Balancing precision with visual density, the work reflects a contemporary interpretation of heritage craft—where fine lines, repetition, and structure become a language for expressing refinement, craftsmanship, and cultural continuity.
ABOUT ARTIST
Dingzhe Gan
Dingzhe Gan is an illustrator based in China whose practice is rooted in engraving- and etching-inspired illustration. Through disciplined control of fine lines and intricate structures, he constructs highly detailed images that unfold with a strong narrative character.
Drawing from a wide range of historical and cultural references, Dingzhe Gan develops compositions that balance visual density with precision. His work is distinguished by its vintage sensibility, refined craftsmanship, and meticulous technique, creating illustrations that feel timeless, immersive, and carefully constructed.
His clients include Rémy Martin, Chow Tai Fook, Sam’s Club, Panasonic, Budweiser China, Pechoin, Codage Paris, and HARIO. His work has received multiple international recognitions, including the A’ Design Award (Silver), Pentawards (Silver), MUSE Design Awards (Platinum), and the iF Design Award.
